So Long Summer, Welcome Autumn!

Even though it’s not technically Autumn yet, with Labor Day behind us, the days are starting to get shorter and the new season is quickly approaching. With predictions of warmer than normal temperatures this Fall, it might be challenging to get in the mood for pumpkin spice lattes and cozy gatherings around the fireplace. But that doesn’t mean you should put off important home maintenance.  Now is the time to get your house ready for the cooler months of the year.  Here is a checklist of Autumn home maintenance projects you can get started on right away:
  • Clean gutters and downspouts to make sure they are clear of leaves and debris. You will need to do this regularly throughout the Fall season.  You may want to consider installing gutter covers so that you won’t have to do this as often.
  • If you’re planning to paint the exterior of your home, Fall is a good time to do it. Temperatures are generally a bit cooler, but not too cold, and humidity is lower.
  • Inspect any wood trim around windows, railings, doors and decks. Fill holes with caulk or replace wood if necessary.
  • Take a good look at your roof. If any shingles are curling, buckling or crackling, replace them.  If your roof is old and in poor condition, this is a good time of year to get it replaced.
  • Have your wood-burning fireplace inspected, cleaned and repaired to prevent chimney fires and/or carbon monoxide poisoning. If you didn’t get your chimney cleaned after last winter, do so now.
  • Clean and replace filters in your furnace or heating system. Have your heating contractor come out and inspect your gas heating system or furnace to make sure it is in good working order. Check out smart consumer tips from your local utility company and learn how to save money on your utility bills.
  • Check the seals on your doors and windows. If the weather stripping is torn or worn, replace it.  Use caulk to fill in any cracks.
  • Once leaves start falling, rake regularly to prevent them from building up on your lawn and suffocating your grass. Fallen leaves are an excellent source of nutrients and organic matter, so it’s even better if you mulch them with your mower and add them to your flower beds.
  • Fall is also a good time to aerate your lawn and spread fertilizer and grass seed.
Get these chores done now and when the weather finally does get cooler, you will have time to snuggle up in front of the fire and enjoy relaxing weekends with your family!   http://huntsvillerealestateonline.com/2017/07/14/popular-trends-coming/ http://huntsvillerealestateonline.com/2017/06/16/lowering-electric/ http://huntsvillerealestateonline.com/2017/04/21/clean-grill/
