Fabulous Fall Foliage in North Alabama
Every fall Huntsville rolls out a foliage carpet dressed in blazing oranges and reds, yellows and purples. This year prime leaf-peeping time will be a little later than usual with
colors peaking in mid-November. However, colors can be brilliant two weeks before and after peak and even different from one area to another. Leaf peepers can drive scenic mountain roads, hike lush mountain paths and stroll downtown to soak in the electrifying display of color. If you’re planning a trip to the Huntsville, AL area, here are the most vibrant places to admire fall foliage:
Monte Sano Sano State Park – Start at Five Points and jump on Bankhead Parkway which will bring you up the backside of Monte Sano Mountain. This winding, two-lane scenic route is lined with trees and will offer a breathtaking bouquet of fall colors. Make sure to bring your camera, because when you get to the top you will be gifted with spectacular views of the colorful mountainside.

Madison County Nature Trail – Also known as the Green Mountain Nature Trail, it is a 72 acre park located atop Green Mountain in southeast Huntsville. Take in the splendor of fall while hiking the 1.5 mile trail surrounding the 17-acre Sky Lake. Stop and take photos at the tranquil covered bridge or enjoy a relaxing lunch in the picnic area. Recognized as a Treasure Forest by the Alabama Forestry Commission, this nature trail is also a Wildlife Sanctuary.

Burritt on the Mountain – If you’re looking for some fun activities to go along with the glorious fall colors, head up to Burritt on the Mountain for their
Folklife Festival happening on Saturday, November 3 from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm and Sunday, November 4 from 12:00 pm to 4:00 pm. Enjoy this showcase of craftspeople, artists and presenter who will be sharing their knowledge about the traditions of the region during the late 19
th and early 20
th centuries. This family-friendly event has something for everyone!

Little River Canyon National Preserve – Located about an hour and fifteen minutes from Huntsville, Little River Canyon is a must-see for leaf peepers! Take a scenic drive along the western side of the canyon along Highway 176 (off AL Highway 35). Start at the Little River Falls Boardwalk Overlook and end at the Eberhart Point Overlook…both offering splendid views of autumn awesomeness! This is a great option for people who can’t (or don’t want to) do a lot of walking. You can pull off to park in several areas to take in the views.
