Concerts On The Dock Are Back April 12, 2013
Easily some of Lowe Mill’s most popular and well-attended events are its Concerts on the Dock. These are free outdoor shows that happen every Friday during Spring and Fall from 6-9pm, and they are great way to get a relaxing start to your weekend in an environment filled with other friendly people.
For the next nine Fridays, Concerts on the Dock will host free outdoor shows from compelling regional acts, including:
April 12 St. Paul and the Broken Bones
The Birmingham soul combo's singer Paul Janeway displayed powerhouse pipes on "Land of a Thousand Dances" during an
all-star jam following the Feb. 27 Florence screening of the documentary film "Muscle Shoals," holding his own with other standout performers including Alabama Shakes' Brittany Smith.
April 19 Pine Hill Haints
This dangerous, Florence roots music ensemble (named for an Auburn graveyard) draws on punk verve, Africa-via Bo Diddley rhythms and even lessons learned from old Smiths cassettes on songs such as "Desperation Blues" and "Sugarskull." In 2012, frontman Jamie Barrier explained to me the handmade wooden microphone stand The Haints have used onstage, thusly: "It has to do with the Grand Old Opry."
April 26 Unknown Lyric
Based in Atlanta, this acoustic guitar and violin all-instrumentals duo mashes up the unlikely touchstones of Beethoven and Jay-Z. In our February interview, Unknown Lyric guitarist Jeremiah Turner was asked about the commonality between those iconoclasts. "With Jay-Z, a lot of people who didn't respect hip-hop as an art form prior to him starting are respecting it now. Beethoven, when he started out his music wasn't widely respected but eventually he started to be respected as one of the greatest writers of all-time."
May 3 Ian Thomas and the Band of Drifters
Ian Thomas, who lives in Knoxville and writes songs that address subjects such as "rattlesnakes" and "pantomimes" draws on his background as a street performer. "It's just how I learned to play," Thomas told me last year. "A lot of street performers have that gravitas where they demand to be paid attention to, but I'm not that way. You can take it or leave it. This definitely isn't a street show."
May 10 Megan Jean & The KFB
The South Carolina-based gypsy folk duo features singer/washboard player Megan Jean and banjo player Byrne Klay. Megan Jean named her 1951 Gibson L-4 guitar "Debbie Gibson." "It's my wedding ring," Megan said of the guitar in our 2012 interview. "I didn't want (Byrne) to waste all that money on a ring."
May 17 Mandolin Orange
Carrboro, N.C. folk duo Mandolin Orange named its 2010 debut "Quiet Little Room" partially because the cover photo was taken inside a Raleigh mausoleum. "Which is kind of like the quietest little room you can ever find yourself in," Andrew Marlin told me once. Marlin and fellow singer/multi-instrumentalist Emily Frantz draw on the work of artists including Gram Parson, Townes van Zandt and Nick Drake.
May 24 Christabel and the Jons
Christabel and the Jons have five LPs of Knoxville-made swing music to their credit. A sixth album, "The Same Mistake," is on the way with touches of bossa nova and samba in the tracks.
May 31 Hymn for Her
Forged in Philadelphia, the duo Hymn For Her live, tour and record in a 16-foot 1961 Airstream trailer. The one-word-titled songs, such as "Slips" and "Fiddlestix," on their debut LP "Lucy & Wayne and The American Stream" utilize minimal tools (banjo, cigar-box instruments played with a guitar slide, kick drum and hi-hat) to maximum hoedown effect.
